IPL Photo-rejuvenation

What is IPL or photo-rejuvenation?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or also commonly called photo-facial, or photo-rejuvenation, is used for:

1. Skin imperfections caused by the sun, such as age spots, freckles, and brown “blotches”.
2. Brown patches caused by hormones, such as melasma (mask of pregnancy)
3. Reducing rosacea (redness), spider veins or dilated blood vessels.
4. Stimulating collagen, which improves skin texture and tone, and reduces fine lines.

Most commonly, IPL treatments are done on the face, neck, chest and hands.

IPL works by emitting a range of light rays which target hemoglobin (the red blood cells in the blood vessels) or melanin (the brown pigment in the age spots). This light is absorbed and results in damage to the blood vessel wall, or fragmenting the melanin. These vessels and some of the pigment are then absorbed by the body, or some of the pigmented lesions will flake off externally.

Because the IPL targets melanin, this procedure should not be done on “tanned” skin. Fall and winter are typically the best time for most patients. Self-tanner must also be avoided for 2 to 4 weeks prior to treatment.

There is generally no downtime. You may experience mild swelling, redness or a darkening of the brown spots. The dark spots generally look darker for 3 to 7 days and then gradually clear.

It takes 3 to 5 treatments depending on your skin and the level of correction needed. Treatments are performed every 4 to 6 weeks. Having treatments by an experienced professional is a must for this procedure.  After a consultation, Dr. Lolachi will make a recommendation based on your skin type and concerns.

Dr. Lolachi has performed thousands of IPL photo-rejuvenation procedures since 2007, and as with all other procedures at Lunaris, all IPL treatments are performed by Dr. Lolachi personally.
